I buy and sell a lot of 335's. More than anyone else in the vintage marketplace so I know the product. You can spend anywhere from $6K to over $10K for a Murphy Lab and you'll get a mass produced but well made guitar that approximates a vintage 335 but not quite. Add a set of Throbaks and maybe you're closer. Oh, and wait 20 years or so for the wood to season and you might have a great guitar. Or, you can spend a bit less and get a hand made 335 that doesn't say Gibson on the headstock. It's a McKay. It was built in 2017 by Ken McKay to my personal specs for a client. It has been played for only a few hours and was put away by the owner. It is a 59 copy (long guard, big neck, Mickey Mouse ears, etc) and it's a really good approximation of a vintage 59. I know, I currently own 5 of them. The board is Brazilian (I supplied Ken with the blank). It's light but it is definitely Brazilian from a big slab I bought in the 90's. Pickups (8.2K A4 and 7.5K A4) are Throbaks wound on the same Leesona winder that the real PAFs were wound on. Luxe Bumblebees and vintage wiring make this guitar as close to a real 59 as you're going to get without spending some serious money. This McKay is already 7 years old and it's ready to play after a long nap. It is mint. It has a TKL hard case (original).
