Description

Vintage Martin 0-21 Guitar (used, 1917)

This style (21) has remained in production at Martin Guitars since before the Civil War!

  • Brazilian rosewood back & sides on this 12 fret, vintage Martin guitar
  • Adirondack spruce top
  • Scalloped X-bracing
  • Rosewood body binding
  • V profile neck with volute
  • The top has multiple purfling lines around it; the back has one maple purfling around it.
  • Slotted headstock with figured face plate
  • The engraved Tuning machines looked to be original and are in working condition with a crack in 1 button. The buttons appear to be ivory.
  • Ebony fretboard with Bar frets.  We just leveled the fretboard and dressed the frets. Back in the day, Martin Guitar Co. stuck with installing bar frets on their instruments when others did not.  They found that by wedging them tightly into the fret slots, that the neck would be made more stiff, preventing forward curvature resulting from string tension. (this was prior to truss rods or steel or ebony neck reinforcement.)
  • Inlays are at frets 5, 7, & 9.
  • Although originally built for gut strings, we have strings made for vintage guitars like this instrument on it.  They are low tension, Newtone Heritage steel strings which are handmade in the UK.  These custom strings make this guitar sing!
  • The rosette is herringbone with inner & outer rings.
  • The back center strip sports this same herringbone.
  • "C.F.Martin & Co. Nazareth, PA." is branded on an interior brace.
  • This guitar has Serial # 12700 on the heel block.
  • Ebony pyramid bridge with Ebony bridge pins/pearl eye
  • Ebony end graft with strap pin in the butt of the guitar
  • This example is in fantastic condition. We find one 2" tight crack repair in the top.  It is on the treble side, lower bout of the top. The guitar has few marks from normal play else.  It is in incredibly clean condition for its age.
  • We have put it in a new, TKL AVS case
