Murphy Lab" is already well known and appreciated for their electric guitars.
Murphy Lab is a project that began in 2021 as the culmination of Gibson reissue and aging guru Tom Murphy's experience, skill, and knowledge.

Last year, in 2023, the Gibson Custom Shop Historic Reissue Collection Series lineup was joined by the "Murphy Lab" series, the first Gibson acoustic guitar to be given the light-aged treatment. The "Murphy Lab" series will be the first light-aged Gibson acoustic guitars to be introduced in the series.

The guitar introduced here is a Murphy Lab 1942 Banner J-45 Light Aged.
The J-45 is considered to be the most famous and most widely used Gibson acoustic guitar since its birth in 1942, and reigns as a representative of the round shoulder.

The first thing to note is that this is a reissue of the first specification from around 1942.
The open-back triple pegs and the banner logo on the head, which existed only from 1942 to 1946, are the first features of this model.
The banner on the head, which only existed from 1942 to 1946, is a fan favorite and reads "Only a Gibson is Good Enough".

The pickguard is the small pickguard that was introduced with the J-45.
The combination of the small pickguard and the sunburst is perfect for J-45 fans.

Since the model name is "1942," one might imagine that the neck is like an extra-thick log. But it is not that thick.
The neck is slightly firmer than the regular neck, and is of a good thickness so that anyone can grip it without discomfort.

The bridge is a rectangular, simple rectangular bridge and long saddle design seen in the 1930s and 1940s, and its rugged look seems to embody the "workhorse" nickname of the J-45.

These features are complemented by thermally aged Adirondack red spruce for the top.
The aged finish gives the guitar the appearance of having been played and checkered for many years, and the ultra-thin lacquer finish gives it the feel of a vintage guitar that has had its lacquer thinned over the years.

It is hard to tell from the appearance, but the edges of the body binding are slightly rounded to reproduce the tactile feeling of wear and tear caused by age.

The sound has a vintage-like dry and crisp bass, and the tone has a fast startup with a good sound release, which is clearly different from that of a regular new J-45.
It will be interesting to see how the sound develops as the instrument is played more and more.

The previous owner took good care of this guitar and it comes with the original hard case and certificate of authenticity.
This is a gem filled with the crystallization of Gibson's technology and attention to detail that we would like Gibson fans/J-45 fans to try once.
