In 1991, Kirk Hammett of Metallica brought ESP a request for a new guitar with the features of the KH-2, but with a single cutaway design, and the KH-3 was born. Pushead, Metallica's graphic artist, designed the spider graphics for the KH-3, which was played by Kirk on tour in support of the legendary Black Album of the 1990s.
The original KH-3, which had been on display for many years at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, was returned to ESP and became the basis for the ESP Kirk Hammett Signature 30th Anniversary KH-3 Spider. 30th Anniversary KH-3 Spider is a reissue of the original KH-3 model with several upgrades.
It has the same through-neck construction as the original, with spider and skull inlays. The fingerboard is rosewood, and the 17th through 24th frets have the scalloped finish seen on recent Kirk models. It also features Kirk's signature EMG Bonebreaker pickups.
